This programme has been designed for experienced architectural and drafting technicians who would like to upskill and at the same time upgrade their qualifications.
This Blended Delivery course allows you to study online part time while you work and offers short block courses for specific assessments if required.
Unlike many distance programmes, students will engage in live tutorials at set times that will also be recorded for later reference, have one on one support, will be able to interact with other students online and also have access to specialist software and processing power through a Windows Virtual Desktop. Students will need a computer with webcam, microphone and a good internet connection to access the software and engage in the tutorials.
Some of the programmes that you will be given access to include Revit, Rhino 7, Grasshopper, Sketchup Pro, ArchiCAD, Lumion, Adobe Creative Suite and Blackboard.
The programme is also designed with flexibility in mind, if you prefer to use a different software package that you are already familiar with to complete a project that is fine, as long as you can achieve the required outputs. You will also be able to use information and examples from your own workplace to gain maximum advantage from your studies.
The papers required to pass this qualification will be offered over a five year period for part time students. The following papers are offered in 2022:
BART640 Integrated Environmental Systems (15 credits)
Students will develop knowledge of performance standards related to human activities in buildings and the systems and configurations designed to support those activities with consideration of climate, urban situation, and the natural environment.
BART720 Industry Design Studio Project (30 credits)
Students will complete an industry-related project in an architectural design context. Students will experience a procedure to develop designs from given conceptual level to detail drawings and models to present a complete set of portfolios.
BART740 Research Project (15 credits)
Students will research, plan and present a report on an area of innovation in architecture practice. It gives students the skills to gather, analyse and interpret information on a technological driven architectural research problem using a range of media. Note that you will need to comeup with your own research topic and have this approved at the start of the programme. Guidance will be provided on this once your enrolment has been accepted.
The time each student will need to commit to these three papers will vary based on their experience and ability, but it may total up to 15 hours per week for some.
To gain the Bachelor of Architectural Technology qualification (must already hold the Diploma) all papers listed below will need to be completed:
Students will have completed the New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology, or equivalent.
They will need to provide proof of Diploma completion and undertake a cross-credit process as part of their enrolment.
Language Requirements
Applicants, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following:
NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A-, level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English, or
Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), or Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL), or
Successful completion of all primary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand primary school years 1 to 8) and at least three years of secondary education (being the equivalent of three years from New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States one of the countries listed in Rule 18.5 where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction, or
Successful completion of at least five years of secondary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction, or
Successful completion of a Bachelors’ Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters’ Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or
Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the two years’ preceding the proposed date of enrolment:
IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill.
OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 4 (Academic), b) Level 4 (Academic)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
Language Cert - C1 Expert International ESOL Written (LRW) PASS with no less than 25/50 in each skill and Spoken (S) PASS
Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than distinction in any band
This course option is offered online to students working part time. We are only offering papers BART640, 720 and 740 in 2022. All three papers start in semester 1 and end at the finish of semester 2.
To be awarded the Bachelor of Architectural Technology students will have been credited with all required papers as specified in the programme schedule. The total credit value of the Bachelor of Architectural Technology is 360 credits. Graduates of the bachelor’s degree are entitled to use the letters BArchTech after their names.
