The purpose of He Kokonga Ngākau scholarships and fellowships is to support and contribute to the growing knowledge of Māori trauma and recovery and to support Māori students to complete Master’s and doctoral studies and Māori writers in their writing endeavours.
Successful candidates:
1. will be required to do one formal presentation to researchers, staff and the community of Te Atawhai o Te Ao;
2. will be required to attend the 2021 He Kokonga Whare Symposium in Whanganui, 25 June 2021, to receive the award;
3. will be involved with and actively contribute to a Māori postgraduate support group;
4. may also be invited to contribute to any programme publications and dissemination material; and
may also be offered training, support and other research opportunities.

Eligibility
You may apply if you are studying in the Māori intergenerational trauma and/or recovery fields. You may be undertaking a broad approach in your research or undertaking a whānau, hapū or iwi case study approach.
Eligibility for the scholarships is also based on how closely it matches to our four He Kokonga Ngākau project areas:
Whakamanu Project: museum studies, hapū/iwi knowledge, archival management, library studies, digital platforms or information technology
Whakapapa Project: hapū/iwi studies, iwi/whānau well-being, whakapapa, Kaupapa Māori methodologies
Whakarauora Project: customary fishing methods, tikanga Māori, revitalisation of traditional practices, environmental studies, climate change or the creative arts
Whakatika Project: commercial law, Māori business, justice, social work, human rights
Eligibility for the fellowships is also based on how closely it matches to our four He Kokonga Ngākau project areas:
Whakamanu Project: Māori or indigenous solutions to data sovereignty, archival practices, and/or hapū/marae knowledge systems, protection and access
Whakapapa Project: Whānau responses to intergenerational trauma, whānau-based research, Kaupapa Māori methodologies that have relevance for whānau
Whakarauora Project: Traditional fishing methods, the impact of climate change of customary fishing, application and/or adaptation of maramataka to kai gathering and harvesting
Whakatika Project: Day to day racism in one or more of the following; media and/or representation, food, te reo Māori, business, health. We are particularly interested in those who are looking at interventions, restoration processes and causing change.
Other eligibility criteria include:
You must be a New Zealand Māori.
You must be enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral programme (scholarship applicants) or have evidence of writing (fellowship applicants).
You agree to complete the He Kokonga Ngākau programme evaluation.
Applications will also be considered from students registered at a NZQA and/or other formally recognised trades or arts programme, studying Māori intergenerational trauma and/or recovery.
