This course aims to give students with a relevant undergraduate degree, or equivalent industry experience, the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year of music production topics at Level 7. Follow your passion and refine your musical talent.
Students must choose a minimum of 120 credits from the following schedule of Level 6 and 7 papers. At least 75 of the 120 credits must be at Level 7. The remaining credits may be chosen from Level 6 or 7, with a maximum of 45 credits at Level 6.
Level 6
MUS601 Advanced Applied Music 1 (15 credits)
Following on from MUS501/502, students will continue to receive lessons from their primary instrument tutor, developing their technical ability and musicality to an advanced level. Students will study advanced harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic devices through the lens of established artists, then apply these devices to their own compositions.
MUS602 Advanced Applied Music 2 (15 credits)
Students will continue to receive lessons from their primary instrument tutor, developing their technical ability and musicality to an advanced level. This paper builds on the content covered in Advanced Applied Music 1.
MUS605 Advanced Contemporary Music Writing 1 (15 credits)
This paper will help students develop their individual and collaborative music writing processes to create their own musical identity. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of music and sound related works.
MUS606 Advanced Contemporary Music Writing 2 (15 credits)
This paper will help students develop their individual and collaborative music writing processes to create their own musical identity and builds on the content covered in Advanced Contemporary Music Writing 1. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of music and sound related works.
CTX601 Contextual Studies 2 (15 credits)
This paper helps students develop a capacity to analyse the influences of Te Ao Māori and other knowledge frameworks on creative practices and learn to analyse and critique a range of technological, socio-cultural and historical influences on creative practice using established academic conventions.
MUS603 Advanced Music Performance 1 (15 credits)
This paper helps students develop individual and collaborative skills to inform their music performance identity. Following on from MUS503/504, performances will be focused on the development of original compositions, both in the studio and on stage. Students will learn to take risks with their song writing and be encouraged to venture from their comfort zone as a process of artistic self-development.
MUS604 Advanced Music Performance 2 (15 credits)
This paper helps students develop individual and collaborative skills to inform their music performance identity. This paper builds on the content covered in Advanced Music Performance 1.
AEP504 Applied Audio Engineering 1 (15 credits)
This paper develops students’ ability to apply standard audio engineering techniques and processes to complete a multi-track recording.
AEP602 Production Styles (15 credits)
Students will use audio hardware to apply standard audio engineering processes to complete a multi-track recording. Students will critically analyse historic approaches to audio engineering, music production, audio technology, and processes and techniques as they apply to dynamic recording contexts.
Elective 1 (15 credits)
Students may choose any 15-credit elective from any Level 5 to Level 7 course at MAINZ including DJEMP, Music Event Management, and the Diploma of Audio Engineering and Production.
Level 7
CAP702 Major Project Planning (45 credits)
The student-led capstone project allows students to work within areas of interest applicable to their own artistic identity. This may include (but not be limited to) the creation and/or production of an album or EP, film score or music for game audio.
CAP703 Major Project Implementation (15 credits)
Students will implement the project they planned in Major Project Planning.
RES702 Research (15 credits)
Students will learn to analyse, evaluate and apply effective and appropriate research methodologies and effective problem-solving strategies to research projects. Students will write a research report and deliver an oral presentation of research findings to the class.
SON703 Sonic Art and Applied Production (15 credits)
Students will learn the history and application of Sound Art and Sound Design techniques, including practical skills in advanced sound theory, electronics, and the development of studio-based production skills.
Elective 2 (15 credits)
Students may choose any 15-credit elective from any Level 5 to Level 7 course at MAINZ including DJEMP, Music Event Management, and the Diploma of Audio Engineering and Production. Alternatively, you may choose a 15-credit elective from a Level 5-7 course from any NZ provider.
Elective 3 (15 credits)
Students may choose any 15-credit elective from any Level 5 to Level 7 course at MAINZ including DJEMP, Music Event Management, and Diploma of Audio Engineering and Production. Alternatively, you may choose a 15-credit elective from a Level 5-7 course from any NZ provider.

All Applicants Each applicant should have an undergraduate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalence through a body of work.
Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria if they can demonstrate a history of work, industry experience which in the opinion of the Programme Managers exhibits a likelihood of success in the programme of study.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview or provide a portfolio of audio related work.
English Language Requirements
Applicants, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following
NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or
an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A- level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English; or
Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA),or Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL);or
Successful completion of all primary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand primary school years 1 to 8) and at least three years of secondary education (being the equivalent of three years from New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand,,Australia,Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States one of the countries listed in Rule 18.5 where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or
Successful completion of at least five years of secondary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or

To successfully complete and be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Music Production students must complete the prescribed programme of study and attain a minimum of 120 credits.
